Builder Adoption of AeroBarrier Continues
33% of builders winning a DOE 2021 Housing Innovation Award using whole-house aerosol sealant
As part of EEBA’s annual High-Performance Home Summit, U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm announced grand award winners of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) 2021 Housing Innovation Awards.
“Right now, our buildings use roughly 40% of the nation’s energy, 75% of its electricity, and account for a little over a third of our carbon emissions,” said Secretary Granholm. “Through energy efficiency improvements, we can eliminate waste, lower our bills, reduce pollution, make people healthier, and create tens of thousands of jobs.”

Whole-House Aerosol Sealant: Air Sealing Best Practice
The awards recognize forward-thinking builders taking innovative approaches to build Zero Energy Ready Homes. And a review of this year’s winning projects sees a best practice emerging — using whole-house aerosol sealant as part of a home’s air sealing system.

Diversity across home type and location underscores the increased use of AeroBarrier by builders nationwide. And we’d like to congratulate the 2021 award winners using whole-house aerosol sealant to help make the following projects zero energy ready.
AeroBarrier air sealing technology is used by nine of the 27 builders recognized and in seven of the 29 projects receiving awards. The winning projects using AeroBarrier were able to dial in and verify airtightness, reaching an average of 1.22 ACH50 across the seven projects. This average is lower than the 1.60 average ACH50 for all 29 projects.
