House Rehabs Make Air Sealing Easy & Guaranteed with AeroBarrier
While AeroBarrier is a well-established best practice for new construction projects, our air sealing technology is having a similar impact on house rehabs and other rehab projects. It’s often said that the greenest building is the one already built. Decarbonizing existing buildings is a huge need – helping create affordable housing and preserving historic architecture while making our existing building stock sustainable and healthy.
From older, historic homes to projects like the New American Home Remodel at the 2022 NAHB International Builders’ Show, AeroBarrier is being used to achieve any airtightness requirement on everything from single-family home additions to multifamily gut rehabs. Here are just a few examples from projects across the nation.
Case Study: A Net-Zero Rowhome – AIA Baltimore: A full gut was required to transform this 100-year-old rowhouse into a LEED Platinum, net zero home. Air sealing with AeroBarrier reduced leakage by 94%, exceeding Passive House standards.
Sealing a Heritage Building in Vancouver – Pacific AeroBarrier: Pacific AeroBarrier handled air sealing in six units at this 107-year-old, multifamily property. The rehab project reduced air leakage in these units by 77% using AeroBarrier in addition to ensuring cleaner air as well as sound and odor mitigation.
“The greenest building is the one that is already built.”
— Carl Elefante, sustainable architect
AeroBarrier: A New Tool for Gut Rehabs? – Steven Winter Associates: When doing a gut rehab on a home built in 1924, SWA relied on SuperSeal Insulation for air sealing. The goal was to make the home LEED Platinum, all-electric, and near net zero. AeroBarrier was used to take the house from 3.32 ACH50 leakage down to 1.63 ACH50.
AeroBarrier Case Study: Lower Level of Brick Church, ca 1869 – Green Energy Times: Zone 6 Energy was helping convert a former Methodist church into office space. They reduced air leakage by 87% using AeroBarrier for air sealing.
Guaranteed Air Sealing Made Easy
AeroBarrier replaces inconsistent, unreliable manual air sealing with an automated process that delivers guaranteed results. The technology eliminates guesswork, allowing contractors to literally dial-in desired airtightness. And by automating this process, air sealing labor and costs are decreased.
